Ritchie County was formed in 1843 from portions of Harrison, Lewis and Wood counties. It was named for Thomas Ritchie, a prominent Richmond newspaper editor of the time. Part of Ritchie was taken to form Doddridge in 1845 and another parcel was ceded to Pleasants in 1851. A single farm in Gilmer was added to Ritchie in 1863 in a boundary readjustment.
