Iberian Publishing Company's On-Line Catalog: Upshur County Virginia
Upshur County was formed in 1851 from parts of Randolph, Barbour, and Lewis counties. The county honored the memory of Abel Parker Upshur, statesman, jurist, and secretary of state in President John Tyler's administration. Both Upshur and fellow Virginiana, Thomas Walker Gilmer, secretary of the navy, died in an explosion aboard the USS Princeton in 1844. An additional parcel of Randolph was ceded to Upshur in 1865.
