Pocahontas County was formed in 1821 from Bath and Pendleton counties. Its name honored the daughter of the Indian chief Powhatan. In 1825 and again in 1827 small parcels of Greenbrier county were ceded to Pocahontas jurisdiction. The region of the present-day county was first settled about 1749.
