Wayne County was established in 1842 from the western portion of Cabell County and named in honor of Revolutionary War hero Anthony Wayne. In 1868 a single farm was transferred from Logan to Wayne jurisdiction, and a small part of Wayne was transferred to Cabell. A portion of Lincoln County was ceded to Wayne in 1872. Settlement of the region began very late in the eighteenth century, circa 1795.
