Independent City of Salem
Located in Roanoke County. The town preceded the creation of Roanoke city by nearly a half century, first being laid out in 1802 and then established as a village in 1806. In 1836 Salem was incorporated as a town and it reached its current status as a city in 1968. Salem serves as the county seat for Roanoke County. Its municipal records date from 1968.
