Roanoke County was formed in 1838 from the southern part of Botetourt County. It may have derived its name from the Roanoke River. In 1849 part of Montgomery County was cut off and annexed to Roanoke County. Finally, in 1851 a portion of Roanoke was taken away when Craig County was created.
