Iberian Publishing Company's On-Line Catalog: Independent City of Roanoke
Located in Roanoke county. First called "Big Lick" because of salt deposits in the region, and established in 1852, the town was incorporated in 1874. In 1882 the name was changed to "Roanoke", and it was designated as a city in 1884. A significant annexation of Roanoke County's land in 1976 completed its growth.
Roanoke's municipal records date from 1884. For earlier records, see Roanoke County.
