Preston County was formed in 1818 from the eastern lands of Monongalia County. It was named for James Patton Preston, governor of Virginia from 1816 to 1819. In 1828 Randolph County gave over its extreme northeast corner of land and it surrendered an additional portion in 1838. A small parcel of Monongalia was added to Preston in 1841 and the county reached its present boundaries. {The court house burned in 1869, destroying most records priot to that date}.
