Iberian Publishing Company's On-Line Catalog: Independent City of Poquoson
Located in York County. The name derives from the Algonquin word pocosin, which means dismal or swamp. The name does not appear on maps as a community until a post office is noted there in the mid-1880s. It was not until 1952 that Poquoson became a formal incorporated town and it was elevated to city status in 1976.
