Fluvanna County was formed on 1 July 1777 from the eastern portion of Albemarle County. In earliest documents this county is sometimes referred to as "Anne's River", the translation from the Latin and the early name of the Upper James given in honor of Queen Anne of England. Fluvanna is bounded on the east by Goochland County, to the north by Louisa County, on the west by Albemarle County, and on the south by Buckingham and Cumberland counties. A portion of the boundary between Goochland and Fluvanna was settled in 1785, and the latter's boundaries have remained unaltered since then.
