Wyoming County was formed in 1850 from the eastern portion of Logan County. The origins for the county's name are obscure. Some authorities claim it derives from words meaning large plains. Other sources state it was a creation of the poet Thomas Campbell, and derives from his work Gertrude of Wyoming. In 1871 a single farm was transferred from Wyoming to Logan County jurisdiction.
