Roane County was formed in 1856 from parts of Kanawha, Jackson, and Gilmer counties and named for Virginia jurist Spencer Roane. A small parcel was ceded from Roane to Wirt County in 1782. (Most pre-1900 court records for this county have been destroyed, due to two courthouse fires).
