Putnam County was formed in 1848 from parts of Kanawha, Cabell, and Mason counties. the county honored Israel Putnam, a New England Revolutionary War hero. Kanawha and Cabell ceded additional lands to Putnam in 1850. In 1867 part of Putnam was cut off to form Lincoln County, but in 1868 when the boundaries for Lincoln County were resurveyed, this Putnam cession was restored.
