Princess Anne County was formed from the eastern third of Lower Norfolk County in 1691. This new coastal county, where the first settlers landed eight decades earlier, was named for Queen Anne, then Princess Anne, daughter of James II. Its boundaries remained unchanged until the county was abolished 1 January 1963 to be consolidated with the city of Virginia Beach.
