Prince Edward County was formed in 1754 from the western portion of Amelia County and named for Edward Augustus, a son of Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales. In 1845 a portion of Prince Edward was cut off to form part of Appomattox County.
Prince Edward's court records are intact and have not suffered from wars or courthouse fires. However, the county's early marriage records between 1754 and 1776 are missing.
