Iberian Publishing Company's On-Line Catalog: Independent City of Franklin
Located in Southampton County, the first community on this site was associated with the building of the Portsmouth and Roanoke Railroad in the 1830s. The namesake of the town is unclear. By the time of the Civil War, Franklin was a post village and it was finally incorporated as a town in 1876. Franklin gained the rank of municipal city by court order in 1961.
