Iberian Publishing Company's On-Line Catalog:
Independent City of Fairfax

Located in Fairfax County, the first community on this site was called Providence and dates from its establishment at the site of the county courthouse in 1805. When the town named Fairfax in Culpeper County was renamed Culpeper, Providence took the former's name of Fairfax as its own. The town was incorporated in 1874 and became a city in 1961. For records of the City of Fairfax, see Fairfax County.

For a better understanding of county boundary changes, see our new section Virginia in Maps
