Cumberland County was formed on 20 May 1749 from the lands of Goochland County lying south of the James River. This Southside county was named for William Augustus, duke of Cumberland, third son of George II. In 1777 Cumberland County was divided, its eastern portion being detached to form Powhatan County. In 1778 a small portion of Buckingham County along the James River was added to Cumberland County, and its boundaries have remained unchanged since that time. Numbers of Huguenots settled in this county.
