Charlotte County was formed on 1 March 1765 from the western portion of Lunenburg County. It was named in honor of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, consort of George III. In 1777 a small part of Charlotte's eastern lands were returned to Lunenburg. The final alteration in the boundary occurred in 1845, when a part of Charlotte's northern holdings became part of Appomattox County. The county was settled first from English, Scottish, and Huguenot families moving westward into this new frontier area.
CHARLOTTE CO., VA 1810 CENSUS transcribed by John Vogt. 10 1/2 x 8 1/2, x, 34 pages, illustrations, maps, index. This is the first surviving census for Charlotte, since both the 1790 and 1800 censuses have been lost. The manuscript is transcribed in its original rough alphabetic form, except for the final six folios which are random. Also, the occasional out-of-place name appears in the manuscript. For this reason a complete index is provided.
Charlotte was an important Southside county with a heavy slave population, and the census record covers 1024 households. Many of the early families later migrated westward into the Piedmont and beyond. This document should be a complement to the fine work of Roger Ward (below) on land taxes in the county.
