Independent City of Bedford, Virginia
Located in Bedford county; originally known as "Liberty"; the county seat was moved there in 1782 from New London. Liberty was incorporated as a town in 1839; its name was changed first to Bedford City in 1890 and shortened to Bedford in 1912. In 1969 Bedford was incorporated as a city by court order.
